SAIMM SA Supply Chain Conference & Workshop 2019

The SA Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), The Mandela Mining Precinct (premium sponsor), in partnership with mining supply chain clusters, hosted the South African Mining Supply Chain Conference and Strategy Workshop on the 22nd and 23rd of May 2019, at the Local Southern African Manufacturing Expo (LME) at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec.

The Conference and Workshop represented a unique endeavour to bring together mines, supply chain manufacturers and service providers, to engage, collaborate toward the development of a stronger, well-integrated value chain able to deliver on the requirements of Mining Charter 3, as well as the market demands locally and in Africa.

The conference included presentations from keynote speakers such as MCSA, DTI, SABS, Exxaro, Afreximbank and Dr Paul Jourdan (amongst others). These presentations, insights and discussions provided context behind the new supply chain requirements and practical opportunities which can create the essential capacity and capability in South Africa to be able to meet these requirements such as Standardised Coding and Product Identification system, Technology Availability and Readiness Atlas Database and other local supplier development success stories from a mining perspective .

Following the conference were two workshops focussed on strategies aimed at the effective development of the broader SA Mining Supply Chain in enhancing the industry. The first workshop focused on developing shared strategic thinking on building the capacity and capability of the local mining supply chain and improving its efficacy. The second workshop discussed the value proposition of industry clusters (including potential services clusters) and how effective communication and collaboration among role players can add value to the South African mining industry
