Thermal Spalling – NERB

As part of the Non-Explosive Rock Breaking Programme (NERB) programme of the SAMERDI strategy, thermal spalling is currently being investigated as an ore extraction method. Researchers and some OEMs generated concepts that could be potentially used to clean spalled holes during the thermal spalling process. These concepts were narrowed down to water jetting, augering and vacuuming or combinations of these. The researchers are therefore requesting information on any type of equipment that OEMs may find suitable for this purpose. The holes are unevenly shaped and have the following approximate dimensions:

  • Hole Diameter – 400 mm – 600 mm
  • Hole Length – 20 m to 30 m
  • Hole inclination – flat or 15 to 25 degree dip

RC Drilling Rig – AOK

As part of the Advanced Ore Body Knowledge (AOK) programme of the SAMERDI strategy, Reverse Circulation (RC) Drilling is currently being trialled for collecting geological information ahead of the stope face; this setup is intended to allow quick sorting and interpretation of the geology ahead of the face. Once the RC holes have been drilled, the idea is to extend lightweight rods or scopes into the hole to gather more detailed geological information and this could include:

  •     Rods from a lightweight but strong material to carry a camera deep up diagonal or vertical holes (or any other deployment method for sensors/cameras in up-holes of >100m)
  •     Potentially the drilling machine could also be adapted to push the scope & rods up into the drilled-out hole.

The current RC drill which has been tested is problematically big and heavy on power and therefore AOK are investigating a more compact and efficient machine in this regard; this could include modifying the current RC drill rig or developing one. OEMs are requested to provide information on any type of equipment that may be found to be suitable for this purpose or without limitations OEMs  can come up with concepts of modifying the current RC drill rig or develop one.
