The Mining TARA online database is now live

The Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP) and Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (MEMSA) had launched the Technology Availability and Readiness Atlas (TARA) on 12 November 2020 as part of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s 7th biennial conference held in Pretoria. The objective of Mining TARA is to make information on South African mining equipment and technology directly available, via a central portal, to the South African and international mining communities, as well as to researchers.

TARA is an online portal of locally manufactured mining equipment designed to assist the industry in achieving increased local content and manufacturing. It also allows Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and mining component suppliers to demonstrate their current commercially available technologies. The portal was developed to provide the mining industry with a central access point into the capabilities and offerings of local OEMs, provide technologies and equipment offered by local OEMs, and create a central platform for local suppliers and products to access the local mining supply-chain.

The TARA platform is positioned to foster the modernisation and mechanisation of mining in South Africa. The online platform has been designed to allow OEMs to upload their own product offerings, their technical specifications and images, according to set data fields that align to the mining extraction value chain processes. In addition, OEMs can add their own choice of features and specifications, lending the system great flexibility. From the “Equipment” page, users are able to find specific items through a filtering by category, or a search function.

The TARA system allows for adding items that are still under development, with the intention to facilitate potential research, development and innovation (RDI) partnerships between product developers and end users.  For items under development, the Technology Readiness Level is indicated, creating the potential for TARA to act as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration.

South African OEMs have been hard at work uploading and showcasing their offerings. Rham Equipment, amongst others, have successfully uploaded 35 items, Fermel 23 and Aard Mining Equipment 17 items.  Currently over 130 offerings from local mining OEMs are uploaded and available for viewing by mining houses, with more items added on a regular basis.  The equipment listed already demonstrates the range, quality and sophistication of equipment that is locally available, and facilitates local procurement in line with Mining Charter III.

TARA helps provide seamless access to the variety and selection of local mining equipment. In its vision to maximise the returns of South Africa’s mineral wealth and in so doing, stimulate the production of local mining equipment, the Mandela Mining Precinct has, through its Real-Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) research programme developed the TARA online database, accessible on this link: . Currently, MEMSA membership is a requirement for listing equipment on TARA.
